What types of orthodontic treatments are available

Pen Y Bont offers two distinct teeth straightening treatment options: fixed braces and removable (clear) aligners.

Fixed braces are much more visible on the teeth and are worn 24/7. They will adjust your teeth around the clock, often achieving more complex movements that removable aligners might struggle with – which means they are usually the best option for severe cases of misalignment, overcrowding, or bite issues. Though they do require more maintenance and monitoring, fixed braces are a highly effective and cost-efficient option that has stood the test of time for a reason!

On the other hand, removable aligners like Invisalign™ provide the same teeth straightening benefits but can be taken out of the mouth for eating, drinking, brushing and flossing, meaning there’s no need to adjust your diet or your cleaning routine for the duration of your treatment.

How does Invisalign work

Removable aligner systems like Invisalign™ work by using a series of custom-made, clear plastic aligners that gradually shift teeth into their desired positions.

Initially, we will take a digital scan of your teeth. This creates a precise 3D model which our orthodontists in Bridgend will use to develop a treatment plan that maps out the movements that will be needed to align the teeth. Each set of aligners will be designed to make slight adjustments, typically moving teeth by a fraction of a millimetre each time. Attachments – small enamel-coloured fixtures that are sometimes referred to as buttons – may be added to your teeth to help assist with more complicated movements. But don’t worry, you’ll barely know they are there.

You will need to wear each set of Invisalign™ aligners for 1-2 weeks before switching to the next set. You must wear your aligners for 20-22 hours per day for maximum effectiveness, and remove them for eating and drinking anything other than water.

We’ll ask you to come into our practice for regular checkups, during which we’ll make sure that your Invisalign™ teeth straightening treatment is progressing well. You can also contact our clinic at any time if you have any questions or concerns.

Teeth straightening FAQs

For discreet, comfortable teeth straightening, Invisalign uses clear, removable aligners to gradually align your smile. At Pen Y Bont Dental, we provide a personalised Invisalign treatment plan to suit your lifestyle. Virtually invisible and removable for eating and cleaning, Invisalign offers a convenient, effective way to straighten teeth with minimal disruption to daily life.

How long will it take to straighten my teeth?

The length of your treatment will depend on several factors, including which treatment method has been prescribed (fixed braces or Invisalign™), how misaligned your teeth are to begin with, and how closely you follow our instructions. Most patients need to wear their braces for between 6 months and 2 years.

Are clear aligners as effective as braces?

Invisalign™ clear aligners are much more flexible and convenient, and they can be used in most mild to moderate cases of misalignment. However, if you have a more complex case that involves severe bite issues or overcrowding, we will usually recommend traditional-style braces. Speak to one of our orthodontists to learn more about the differences between these two treatment options and find out which one might be the most suitable for you.

Does teeth straightening hurt?

You may feel some discomfort after adjustments have been made to your fixed braces or you have switched to a new removable aligner. Any uncomfortable sensations should be temporary, because your teeth and jaw will adapt to the pressure. You can take over the counter painkillers to help manage any short-term pain.

Will I need to wear a retainer after straightening my teeth?

Yes, because your custom-made retainer will help to keep all your teeth in the correct position after your treatment ends. We recommend wearing this retainer overnight for as long as you want to maintain your results.

How much will it cost to straighten
my teeth?

The final fee will depend on which teeth straightening option is the best fit for you. Our teeth straightening packages typically start from £1,900. Please contact our team for more information on pricing and the various payment plans we can offer.
